HOLTVILLE — Fire officials here have said a fire that destroyed a tractor-trailer rig Sunday was arson.

Holtville Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Cartee said the fire was reported at 11:35 a.m. in the 600 block of Holt Avenue.

He said the rig was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. He also said officials are quite confident the fire was arson.

He added it took about 20 minutes for firefighters to control the fire and the blaze was extinguished shortly thereafter. Firefighters remained at the scene for about six hours cleaning the mess.

Cartee said the fire caused the tires in the rig to burst, which released a loud popping noise. The rig was destroyed.

He said employees of the owner of the truck assisted in the cleanup.

Holtville police are investigating the incident. They were not available for comment this morning.
