I'd like to thank the El Centro Police Department and particularly Lt. Paul Longoria for the effort they're making to stop illegal smoking in our local bars.
Recently the lieutenant and the officers of the ECPD have cracked down on the recalcitrant businesses that have been ignoring the ban for over three years.
These bars should actually be grateful to the ECPD as I recently read an article where, in Shasta County, Cal-OSHA was called in and two separate bars each received a fine of $54,000 for refusing to comply with the no-smoking law. The article pointed out that Cal-OSHA can fine an establishment up to $70,000, so if these businesses are not concerned about the health of their employees or their patrons, maybe the possibility of such a fine will be of concern to them.
Thank you very much, ECPD.
