Malvik qualifies for CIF finals

SAN DIEGO — Brawley Union High School swimmer Petter Malvik set three school records at the CIF San Diego Section Division III swimming preliminaries at Mount Carmel High School here Thursday.

Malvik took sixth place in the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 1.26 seconds and qualified for the meet finals Saturday at Mount Carmel. Malvik teamed with Ethan Schoch, Robbie Overstreet and Trevor Smith to take 10th and set a school record in the 200 medley relay in 1:51.69 to qualify for the consolation championships Saturday. Malvik set a school record in the 200 individual medley, placing 17th in 2:14.92.

To qualify for the finals, a swimmer or relay team needs to finish in the top six slots. Finishing between seventh and 12th qualifies swimmers for the consolation championships.

Also on the boys side, Schoch took 14th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.99 and Overstreet placed 21st in the 50 freestyle in 23.92.


Central Union High's Fabian Amparano took 12th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.62 and qualified for the consolation championship.

On the girls side, Brawley had one finals relay qualifier and three consolation qualifiers, two of them relay teams.

Brooke Pace, Tracy King and sisters Jennifer and Natalia Cardenas qualified for the finals in the 400 freestyle relay, taking sixth 3:59.65, a school record.

Jennifer Cardenas took seventh in the 100 butterfly setting a school record with a 1:03.05.

Also qualifying for the consolation round were the 200 medley relay team of Denae Smith, Pace, Lauren Roberts and Jennifer Cardenas, taking ninth in 2:01.27 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Smith, King, Natalia Cardenas and Roberts also placing ninth with a school record 1:50.60.

Pace took 13th in the 100 free in 57.94, a school record.

In the 200 freestyle, Natalia Cardenas took 14th in 2:11.72 and King finished 20th in 2:12.92. King finished 16th in the 100 butterfly with Natalia Cardenas taking 19th in 1:07.66. Smith was 23rd in the butterfly in 1:09.65.

Rounding things out were Jennifer Cardenas with 14th place in the 200 individual medley in 2:26.17 and Lauren Roberts finishing 14th in the 50 freestyle in 26.82.

The qualifiers will return to competition at Mount Carmel at 3 p.m. Saturday.
