Youth Sports: Locals qualify for SCMAF championships

ESCONDIDO — Seeley's Aletta Black won two events at the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation track and field regionals here last weekend, qualifying her for the SCMAF championships.

Competing in the girls 1987 division, Black won the shot put with a put of 24 feet, 8 inches and the softball throw with a toss of 111-2.

Winning in the 1988 girls division was Jasmine Moreno of Brawley in the high jump with a 4-4 and Valorie Smith in the shot put (26-1). Nadia Romero took second in the high jump with a 4-3 in the '88 girls division. Jasmine Moreno of Brawley won the high jump (4-4) in the 1988 division and Adriana Lopez of El Centro won the 1,600 meters in 6:37 in the 1989 division.

On the boys side, winning the '87 division from El Centro were Dustin Driscoll in the 100 meters (11.88) and the softball throw, Ausbaldo Corrales in the 200 meters (26.40 seconds) and Alfredo Ibarra in the shot put (30-6).


In the '88 division from El Centro, Erik Leal and Ricardo Sanchez tied for first in the high jump with 4-11 leaps and Kenny Taylor won the 200 in 25.95. Brawley's Cesar Hernandez won the 100 (12.65) and Stephen Dominguez took the softball throw with a 207.

Heber's Henry Lazano won the shot put with a toss of 38-2 in and Pete Robinson took the long jump (18-1 1/4) in the 1988 division.

Joseph Sarmiento of Brawley won the 200 (27.51) and the shot put (33-4) in the 1989 division. El Centro's Jovane Camacho took the 400 in 59.39.

Rounding out the local winners were El Centro's Spencer Hughes in the 100 (15.32) in the '91 division, '92 product Joseph Lopez in the long jump (11-7 1/2), Eddie Sanchez ('93) in the long jump (11-6) and Mario Flores in the 1994 division taking the long jump (8-10).

All qualifiers will compete in the SCMAF championships at Gahr High School in Cerritos on May 25.
