Improvements to El Centro's downtown parking lots began this week with the installation of shade in two of the lots in the 500 block of State Street, across from the library, and on Broadway across from La Fonda restaurant.

In addition to the shading, some city lots will be revitalized with new asphalt or seals and be landscaped.

Ken Skillman, city director of development services/city engineer, said each of the two parking lots will get two shading structures at a total cost of $61,973.61.

He said the shading project is sort of a test, and if received well, there could be further shading added. A total of 31 spaces will be shaded. He said lengthy discussions were conducted to determine what to shade and where.

"Work should be completed in a couple weeks," he said.

In June, downtown lots will get revitalized and landscaping, primarily shade trees, will be installed.

Skillman said the contract calls for work to be completed in about 100 days but probably won't take that long. The revitalization will cost $203,488.25 and the shade trees $57,821.60.

Lots to be revitalized are in the 500 blocks of downtown and one in the 700 block of Main Street. Landscaped lots include three on the north side of State and the lot across from La Fonda.
