A very hearty thank you to all who have contributed so generously to LVA/IV, especially this past month at the mystery dinner theater/silent auction and the 14th annual Imperial Valley Press Spelling Bee to Benefit Literacy. We, here at literacy headquarters, realize that these two fund raisers were back-to-back — and we have gotten behind on our thanks, but not our gratitude.
The mystery dinner theater premiered an original script by Jason Zara, with collaborationists the Barrington family, Marjo Mello and Susan Manger. Special entertainers added to the fun were: emcee Judge Dennis James, the Jugless Jug Band, Bonnie Olesh, Bryce Brown, Victor and Rowena Carrillo, Charlie Manger and all the good sports that fielded lines of the play, especially county Board of Supervisors chair, Hank Kuiper and Sheriff Harold Carter. With the help of some 48 donors to the silent auction, it was a profitable evening as well.
In the spelling bee, the El Centro Rotary topped the field of spellers using strategy and wit to defeat the twice champions El Centro Optimist, and third place winners (tied), Valley, Independent Bank and El Centro Kiwanis. Centinela State Prison, with 21 boosters in the audience, walked away with the booster award. We thank all 11 teams for their participation, IID for contributing, Pizza Hut, Pepsi-Cola, Yum-Yum, Scribbles, HomeTown Buffet and Imperial Valley Press for the door prizes. Special recognition goes to Chromalloy Southwest, which has supported LVA/IV for more than 10 years — and this year, as in the past several, sponsored their team as well as one other.
