>>50 years ago — The new Imperial Valley Art League, sponsored by the Holtville Chamber of Commerce, has been formed to promote an interest in art among high school students and other young people.

>>40 years ago — St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church of Brawley will have its "Spring Jamaican Fiesta" from noon to 7 p.m. today. Barbecue and Mexican-style food will be served and a dance program will be presented.

>>30 years ago — Amid speculation he might return in time to attend his ex-wife's trial in Westmorland, film actor Marlon Brando left El Centro for what he described as a "short vacation," in Baja California. He was reportedly spending the weekend in Puertecito, 50 miles south of San Felipe.

>>20 years ago — Exuding confidence that he will be the next governor of California after the November election, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley swept into the Valley late Tuesday for a reception at the Imperial County airport and a public appearance across the highway at the California Mid-Winter Fairgrounds.
