CALEXICO — Police here arrested a 68-year-old Modesto man after he allegedly raped a 39-year-old woman in a motel.

Jose Arballo Nuñez was arrested at 6:40 p.m. Sunday in the Villa Sur Motel, 304 E. 4th St. in Calexico.

Calexico police Lt. Jim Neujahr said police received a report of a rape at 4:14 a.m. Sunday.

A woman told police Nuñez had raped her in his motel room. The two had met elsewhere and Nuñez had agreed to give the woman a ride home.

Nuñez told the woman he was going to stop at his motel room to change clothes. The woman then asked if she could use the restroom.

While she was in the room he allegedly raped her. She suffered slight physical injuries, said Neujahr.

Neujahr said no weapon was used and the woman has been given a forensic examination. He said all the evidence gathered is consistent with the woman's allegations so police will be filing a complaint against Nuñez with the Imperial County District Attorney's Office.

Neujahr added Nuñez is a vendor at the Santo Tomas Swap Meet in Calexico.

Nuñez was being held in county jail with bail set at $50,000 today.
