May 21, 2002|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

Jury selection in the murder trial of a 40-year-old El Centro man accused of fatally stabbing 19-year-old Edward De La Cruz in July resumed Monday.

Salvador Serrato, thought to be responsible for the murder of De La Cruz, was in court Monday as jury selection continued.

Jury selection continued this morning and was expected to be finished today. Opening statements might start today as well.

The stabbing occurred July 1, 2001 in the 200 block of East Olive Avenue in El Centro, allegedly after Serrato and De La Cruz had an altercation.

De La Cruz, a former local resident living in Harbor City, was in El Centro visiting relatives.

Serrato was arrested July 16 at a relative's home in the 300 block of Villa Avenue in El Centro after relatives told police Serrato wanted to turn himself in.
