Winners announced for mathematics competition

The Imperial County junior high school mathematics competition was May 14 at the Community Learning Center in Brawley.

The countywide competition was open to any school with a seventh or eighth grade and was limited to one team per school per grade level. Each team consisted of five members and an alternate.

The schools that participated were Barbara Worth Junior High School in Brawley, Frank Wright Intermediate School in Imperial, Heber Junior High School, Magnolia School in rural Brawley, McCabe School in rural El Centro, Meadows School in rural El Centro, St. Mary's School in El Centro, and Westmorland Elementary School.

The winners for the seventh grade team competition were:

First place: Magnolia School — Coach: Blaine Smith

Team members: Brett Mamer, Adam Cato, Barrick Armstrong, Travis Cox, Peter Rebik and Matt Reed.

Second place: Frank Wright Intermediate School — Coach: John Mendoza

Team members: Brittany Seeger, Miguel Meza, Jackie Rizo, Gurpaul Sandhu, Emily Mayhew and Lily Casillas.

Third place: St. Mary's Catholic School — Coach: Jesus Martinez

Team members: Paola Martin Del Campo, Alejandro Calderon. Juan I. Guajardo, Alberto Murillo, Arturo Morales and Alexandra Burkhuch

The winners of the eighth grade competition were:

First place: St. Mary's Catholic School - Coach: Jesus Martinez

Team members: Pericles Kontos, Elizabeth Brinkerhoff, Tony Leone, Karan Gupta, Miguel Murillo and Marisol Ainslie

Second place: McCabe School - Coach: Cindy Kemp

Team members: Kazleigh Noe, Mitzi Larson, Gurdeep Deol, Lisa Gamboa, Jose Ramirez and Chris Miles

Third place: Frank Wright Intermediate School - Coach: Lee C. Gibbs

Team members: Ryan Rigney, Sam Felix, Kyna Solano, Paul Williams, Vanessa Martinez and Melissa Devore
