Opening statements begin in trial of E.C. man charged with murder

Opening statements in the trial of a 40-year-old El Centro man accused of fatally stabbing 19-year-old Edward De La Cruz began this morning.

Salvador Serrato is accused of the murder of De La Cruz on July 1 in the 200 block of East Olive Avenue in El Centro, allegedly after Serrato and De La Cruz had an altercation.

Opening statements were scheduled to begin at 9 this morning.

De La Cruz, a former local resident living in Harbor City was in El Centro visiting relatives when he was killed.


Serrato was arrested July 16 in a relative's home in the 300 block of Villa Avenue in El Centro after relatives told police Serrato wanted to turn himself in.

Jury selection began May 16 and ended Wednesday afternoon. After going through a few hundred potential jurors, the jury was seated.

Representing Serrato will be Calexico-based attorney Eduardo Rivera while Imperial County Deputy District Attorney Susana Salgado will be the prosecuting attorney.
