CALEXICO — A single- story, 15-room motel here suffered major damage during a fire this morning.

Calexico fire Capt. Pete Mercado said firefighters were called to a fire around 2:30 at the Border Motel, 120 E. 4th St.

The fire blazed for about 45 minutes before fire crews were able to extinguish it. The blaze prompted a third alarm, which called for assistance from fire departments from El Centro Brawley, Holtville, Imperial County, Naval Air Facility El Centro and Centinela State Prison, although the Centinela engine crew was sent back as it made its way to the scene.

The fire, said Mercado, is of suspicious origin and investigators think it started on the northwest side of the motel in an alley. The fire is still under investigation.

About half of the structure suffered major fire, smoke and water damage. The electrical room also was damaged, which caused the electricity in the motel to shut down.

A few occupants of the motel were evacuated during the fire. No one was injured.
