In light of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, deciding on a topic of this year's fifth annual Brawley Inn Writing Contest was not difficult. Students from around the Valley wrote heartfelt essays about their "hometown" heroes.
The judges and I had a challenging task selecting the best. Many times the hero was a parent or grandparent, or even a teacher. What we learned is that each of us have the ability within us to be a hero to someone else, even if in only a small and ordinary manner. Our students realize that heroes are ordinary people who do extraordinary things simply by being themselves. In the fifth year of this event we saw repeat winning entries by Julianna Caro and Sutton Morgan. What gifted writers with much to say!
The Brawley Inn is generous in its recognition and encouragement of the Valley's youth. Their community spirit is uplifting. Thank you Alex Salazar, general manager, and Mr. Chang, owner, for continuing as partners in education.
