I read with great satisfaction that the Calexico political machine has finally decided to take a look at the downtown merchant area. This is something long, long overdue.
While they're at it, take a look at the deplorable state of the interior of Calexico as well. The older neighborhoods are deteriorating to the point of embarrassment. Each time I return to visit Calexico, I see the periphery of town — and admire the new homes and businesses, all very attractive and progressive — but a trip through the center of town is nothing short of heartbreaking.
The time has come for the political machine to do something about "Old Calexico." It's time to limit growth and concentrate on making Calexico the city is should be.
