El Centro man dies in collision

HEBER — A 78-year-old El Centro man was killed in a car accident Sunday afternoon west of here.

A press release from the California Highway Patrol stated Tony Olivas Casillas, 78, of El Centro was killed near the intersections of Clark and Heber roads.

The press release states Casillas was driving west on Heber approaching Clark while Tabita Velarde, 20, of Calexico was driving north on Clark at a speed around 65 mph approaching the intersection.

Casillas was driving a pickup while Velarde was driving a compact car.

Casillas had started to cross the intersection when Velarde hit the passenger side of his vehicle. The press release stated she applied her brakes but was unable to avoid striking Casillas' pickup with her car.


Casillas was not wearing his seat belt while Velarde was wearing her seat belt.

Velarde was not cited.

Both were taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center, where Casillas died.

Velarde sustained moderate injuries.
