IID board approves funds for payment-processing equipment

The Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors on Monday:

· approved $113,000 for payment-processing equipment and software expected to reduce the cost of handling payments from 23 cents per item to 8 cents. The estimated annual savings is about $150,000 through a reduction in staff from three full-time equivalent employees to one, the elimination of supplies and services required under the present process, according to a staff report.

· approved two agreements for the supply of 25 megawatts each of energy to the district. Under one agreement, IID will pay $36.35 per megawatt-hour for five years. Under the second, the district will pay $81.50 per megawatt-hour for peak power from June 1 through Sept. 30, 2003, 2004 and 2005. The power would be used eight hours a day except for Sundays.

· approved a $53,000 contract for a natural gas risk management program.

Directors Lloyd Allen and Rudy Maldonado voted "no."

· approved a $1.95 million contract amendment on work to the district's power generation, transmission and distribution system. The approval would include ratification of a settlement of potential litigation regarding a dispute between the IID and Norcross, Ga.-based Advanced Control Systems Inc. over ACS's contract performance for installation of an energy-management system and replacement of the system control and data acquisition system for the district's electrical generation, transmission and distribution operations.

· accepted the energy cost adjustment for June of $13.60 per 1,000 kilowatt/hours of electricity. The ECA was established to reflect the fluctuation between the budgeted cost of fuel and purchased power and the actual costs as they are determined.

· adopted a new injury and illness prevention program in accordance with state law.

· selected GE Hydro Power Inc. as a partner with whom to modernize the district's hydro power plants.
