CALEXICO — Police here, with help from other law enforcement agencies, made 17 arrests Wednesday during a street arrest operation.

The arrests ranged from felony drug possession to being under the influence to possession of alcohol by minors.

Calexico police Lt. Jim Neujahr said the operation was in response to an increase in street crimes such as strong-armed robberies.

He said from 1 and 10 p.m. agents from the Imperial County Narcotic Task Force, the Imperial Valley Street Interdiction Team and the Calexico gang team made up of Calexico police officers and county Probation Officers kept watch over Blair and Beach avenues.

"We targeted those that like to do street crimes," said Neujahr.

The avenues, he said, have been a problem in regard to street crimes.

Such operations are done when crime rates seem to rise.

"If we see a trend, a certain rise, then we go out and target those suspects," he said.

"We're out there to take law enforcement actions and try to stop some of the street violence," said Neujahr.
