Ordination ceremony set in El Centro

Seven men were to be ordained to the ministry of the permanent diaconate by San Diego Catholic Bishop Robert H. Brom today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in El Centro.

The ordination Mass was to begin at 1 p.m., followed by a reception in St. Mary's social hall.

Three of the seven make up the largest group of deacons from the Imperial Valley ever to be ordained for the diocese.

Brom was to ordain Domingo Enriquez of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in El Centro, Refugio Gonzalez of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in Calexico and Ruben Valenzuela of St. Joseph's parish in Holtville.

Four men from parishes in San Diego County also were to be ordained: Miguel Enriquez and Gerald McClellan Jr. of St. Patrick's Church in Carlsbad, Michael Maria of Santa Sophia Church in Spring Valley and Jose Medina of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in San Ysidro.

The permanent diaconate is the lowest degree of sacred orders in the Roman Catholic Church. There are 78 active permanent deacons in the diocese; after today there will be 85.
