>>50 years ago — Brawley honored its dead veterans in traditional Memorial Day services at Riverview Cemetery on May 30. The ceremony was sponsored jointly by American Legion Post 60 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2041.

>>40 years ago — George B. Phelps has been elected and installed as commander of Brawley's American Legion Post 60. The election and installation took place at a meeting May 17 in the veterans hall in Brawley.

>>30 years ago — A change in employee medical insurance coverage raising the maximum major medical payment from $10,000 to $20,000 and hiking the daily hospital room payment from $15 a day for 50 days to $45 per day for 70 days was approved by the Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors.

>>20 years ago — The Calexico Chamber of Commerce board of directors Thursday refused to accept the resignation of Director Fred M. Knechel after Knechel said his position as a city councilman might cause a conflict of interest in approving funding for the chamber. Knechel said the Calexico City Council is scheduled Thursday to consider the 1982-83 funding for the chamber. The chamber is requesting $25,000.
