B.P. drug seizures, apprehensions down

U.S. Border Patrol agents seized 1,824 pounds of marijuana in May in the El Centro sector while the number of apprehensions of immigrants in the sector dropped 34 percent compared to May 2001.

A press release form the Border Patrol states the total number of apprehensions in May was 11,412, 34 percent lower than the May 2001 total of 17,203.

In April the total number of apprehensions in the sector was 14,272, which also dropped from April 2001 by 31 percent.

The marijuana seizures in the sector in April totaled 1,912 pounds, about the same as May.

So far this fiscal year, which started Oct. 1, sector agents have seized 11,873 pounds of marijuana, 1.2 pounds of heroin and 22.68 pounds of other drugs not specified.

Total illegal immigrant apprehensions in the sector for fiscal 2002 are 61,840.
