Brawley Class 22 team gets 3rd overall at Baja

June 04, 2002

ENSENADA — The motocross team of Brawley's Aaron Tuck and Craig Smith pushed hard but couldn't overtake off-road star Steve Hengeveld of Oak Hills, who teamed with Johnny Campbell of San Clemente to win the class 22 title at the Tecate SCORE Baja 500.

Class 22 bikes are the big guns, 251 cc motors and above.

Hengeveld/Campbell turned in a time of 9:35:54 riding a Honda XR650R to take first overall and the class 22 win.

Tuck and Smith finished third overall and third in class 22 with a time of 10:00:17. The pair averaged 47.339 mph on Tuck's Honda XR650R.

The third-place finish gave Tuck consecutive top three finishes at SCORE races. He took second in class 22 racing at this spring's SCORE San Felipe 250, finishing behind Hengeveld then as well.

Andy Girder of Los Olivos and Danny Cooper of Las Vegas finished just in front of Tuck's Honda, clocking a time of 9:56:36.

In class 21 motocross racing action, 126 cc to 250 cc motors, Martin Bejarano of Calexico and his Arizona-based teammates Dayton Raper and Dave Gronland won in 11:14:07. Bejarano said if it weren't for continuous mechanical problems he could have finished even faster. He said he had to re-jet the carburetor on his Kawasaki AV 150 twice.

Asked to talk about one of the best parts of the race, the beach run on the way back into Ensenada, Bejarano admitted with a grin, "The bikini girls — they were trying to distract me."
