Ten-year-old Samantha Villanueva, daughter of Carlos and Regina Villanueva of El Centro, participated in the Miss Southern California American Coed Pageant on May 25 and 26 in the Los Angeles Airport Marriott Hotel.

Girls between ages 10 and 12 competed in the pageant.

Pageant scoring included poise and appearance in formal dress, personality during an interview and presentation and appearance in an interview outfit. Samantha placed second runner-up overall out of 71 contestants in the pre-teen division.

She placed first in modeling and second runner-up in talent. She was a finalist in the categories of "It's the Spirit of America Award," photogenic and outstanding program participation.

Following the pageant, Samantha received two invitations — one from placing in the queen's court and one to compete in the talent contest — at the national pageant from Nov. 25-30 at the Hilton in Walt Disneyworld in Orlando, Fla.

Samantha has been involved in Pop Warner cheerleading, having competed in the national competition in Orlando last year. Her other activities include kung fu, baseball and catechism.

Samantha said she enjoys inline skating, skateboarding, swimming, helping with Pop Warner and with handicapped children, reading, mathematics, hanging out with friends and playing with her younger sister and brother.

Samantha's awards outside sports and the pageant include being named student of the year, student of the month and earning a scholastic achievement award.
