Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in Hems Bros. Mortuary chapel in El Centro for Chew S. "Sam Mah" Poon, 89, of El Centro, who died May 28 in El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Hems Bros. Mortuary chapel in El Centro. The Rev. Joe Finnell of Calipatria Community Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in El Centro.

Mr. Poon was born Sept. 28, 1912, in Canton, China. He was raised and attended schools in Modesto.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II at the European theater of operations.

He married Suite Fong Wong in Canton on Feb. 6, 1931.

Mr. Poon came to El Centro in 1932 and worked in the restaurant and grocery business for 46 years. He retired in 1978.


Survivors include his wife, Wong Suite Fong Poon of El Centro; sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Susan Poon of El Centro and Frank and Ting Mah of Los Angeles; son, Albert Mah of Los Angeles; daughter, Nancy Mah of San Diego; grandchildren and spouses, Dr. Michael Poon Mah and Dr. Min Chae Yoo of Thousand Oaks, Melanie Poon Mah and John R. Kosic and Dr. Steven Poon Mah and Seapa Doughty, all of San Diego, Shirley Poon Mah and Jerry Garcia of Yuma; grandchildren, Sandra Poon Mah of San Diego and Robert, David and Ryan Mah, all of Los Angeles; and great-grandchildren, Annelise and Andrew Yoo Mah, both of Thousand Oaks, and Rachel Lorriane and Sarah Nicole Kosic and Aaron Jutila, all of San Diego.


A Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Calexico for Jesus Maria Amabisca, 76, of Calexico, who died Thursday in El Centro Regional Medical Center.

The Rev. David Sereno will officiate.

Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.

Mr. Amabisca was born Sept. 16, 1925, in the state of Sonora, Mexico.

According to family, Mr. Amabisca liked working with cattle, loved children and was always playing with children.

Survivors include his brothers, Luis Amabisca of Calexico and Francisco Amabisca of Sonora; sisters, Maria Correa of Douglas, Ariz., and Adelina Guerrero of National City; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Graveside services will be at 2 today in Panteón No. 2 in Mexicali for Salomón Nuñez, 69, of El Centro, who died Sunday in his home.

Mr. Nuñez was born March 31, 1933, in Holtville.

He was a farm laborer, hay hauler and owned Nuñez Trucking for about 20 years.

Mr. Nuñez was a member of Emmanuel Latin Church of El Centro.

Survivors include his children, Victor, Daniel, Olga, Luz, Salomon, Patricia, and Nellie Nuñez, Tomasa Ramos, Elizabeth Delgado, Estela Cervantes, Catalina Aguirre, Leticia Reyes, Beatrice Rios and Jesusa Felix; brother, Jesus Nuñez; sister, Maria Luisa Nuñez; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
