2 killed, 1 injured in traffic accident on Highway 98

CALEXICO — A traffic accident Wednesday on Highway 98 east of here claimed the lives of two El Centro residents and left a Lynwood man injured.

According to a California Highway Patrol report, a 27-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were killed in the accident which occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on Highway 98 east of Cole Road.

The victims' names were not available as of presstime this morning.

The report states a car driven by the woman was traveling east on Highway 98 as a pickup driven by Reynaldo Arredondo of Lynwood was heading west on the highway.


Arredondo's age was not available.

The press release states the car, for unknown reasons, skidded sideways into the westbound lane directly into the path of Arredondo, who tried to stop his vehicle but was unable to avoid colliding with the car.

Arredondo's vehicle burst into flames after the impact, said Calexico Fire Department officials. Arredondo suffered chest trauma in the accident, but he was not burned. He was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center.

The woman and man in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. Information on the specific cause of their deaths was unavailable this morning.

Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat belt, according to the Highway Patrol.
