HEBER — A 40-year-old El Centro man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after he caused an accident in which he seriously injured himself and injured four others while fleeing from California Highway Patrol officers.

A press release from the CHP states Guillermo Hernandez was arrested after he caused an accident around 10:30 p.m. Saturday on Dogwood Road north of Willoughby Road south of Heber.

Hernandez was arrested but was not jailed because of major injuries he sustained. He was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center. Information on his condition was not available today.

The press release states a complaint against Hernandez will be filed with the District Attorney's Office.

According to the press release, two CHP officers were heading north on Dogwood when they spotted a sedan heading south on Dogwood at about 80 mph. The posted speed limit is 55 mph.

The officers quickly made a U-turn and attempted to stop the driver. The driver turned off all the vehicle lights in an attempt to evade the officers.

While he was heading south with none of the car's lights on, Liliana M. Gomez, 26, was traveling north in a sedan on Dogwood with passengers Antonio Orosco, 30, an 11-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, all of El Centro.

Hernandez lost control of his vehicle after it drifted off to the west road edge of Dogwood. He attempted to swerve back onto the roadway but overcorrected. His car slid sideways into the path of Gomez's vehicle.

Gomez and the two juveniles suffered moderate injuries. Orosco had minor injuries. All four were taken to El Centro Regional, where they were treated and released.
