One killed, 11 hurt in rollover north of Westmorland

WESTMORLAND — A single-vehicle rollover accident north of here left one person dead and 11 injured Monday afternoon.

A late-model sport utility vehicle suspected of carrying 12 illegal immigrants overturned around 2:40 p.m. on Bannister Road east of Lack Road and north of Westmorland.

The name of the man who died was not available this morning, nor were his age and city of residence.

According a press release from the California Highway Patrol, the man who died was the driver of the vehicle.

CHP Public Information Officer Carlos Davila said the accident occurred when the driver allowed the vehicle to run off the road. The driver tried to swerve back onto the roadway but lost control of the vehicle and it overturned.

The man who was killed was partially ejected from the vehicle.

A 16-year-old girl from Veracruz, Mexico, who was a passenger in the vehicle, suffered a fractured spine in the accident. She was taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley. A 17-year-old female from central Mexico also suffered an evulsed right eye and head lacerations. She was taken to Pioneers.


The other nine passengers suffered minor injuries. Two were taken to Pioneers and the rest to El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Davila said witnesses told officers the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed.
