A big rig hauling a trailer with scrap metal overturned north of here Tuesday, blocking southbound traffic on Highway 111 for a short while.

An earlier model big rig from Mexicali, driven by 31-year-old Ismael Partida Flores of Mexicali, overturned around 12:40 p.m. as it was making a left turn from Chick Road on to Highway 111, southeast of El Centro.

A press release from the California Highway Patrol stated the driver was heading west on Chick. He stopped at the intersection with Highway 111 and proceeded to make a left turn when he felt it was safe to do so.

While Flores was making the left turn, the scrap metal he was carrying shifted to the right and caused the trailer to overturn, pulling the tractor on to its right side as well.

The driver was not hurt.

CHP officers and workers from the California Department of Transportation helped control traffic while other personnel removed the cargo from the trailer and placed it in another tractor trailer rig.
