The opening of the Holiday Inn Express on Smoketree Lane near Interstate 8 is behind schedule but nearing completion, according to owner Nick Patel.

"The reason we're delayed is because we have some safety issues dating back to an earlier contractor," he said. "We're correcting those deficiencies now."

The hotel was expected to open in October 2001. The new target date is the end of August.

"We're about a year behind schedule," Patel said. "We didn't want to open it like that."

He also said an additional $1.2 million has been invested in the project.

The hotel will include such amenities as high-speed Internet connections and granite floors in the main entry and all of the bathrooms.

"It'll make everybody feel they are in an expensive home," Patel said.

The deficiencies are structural and cosmetic in nature, Patel said. He said he did not want to have problems five years after opening.

When asked if the building had been inspected as required, Patel said the city has completed 95 percent of the inspections.
