Holtville, Brawley go 3-0 in first day of passing tourney

June 19, 2002|STAFF REPORT

Both Holtville and Brawley Union high schools' stripped-down football squads went 3-0 in the first three rounds of the Campus Life passing league tournament at El Centro's Sunflower Park on Tuesday.

Central Union High went 2-1 while Palo Verde, Southwest, Imperial and Parker High of Parker, Ariz., all went 1-2. Calipatria High went 0-3 for the day.

Youth for Christ Executive Director Todd Evangelist said the second day of the tournament will resume at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sunflower with teams playing either three or four more rounds.

He added there isn't really any prizes awarded to the top team, just the chance for the teams to compete.

"It's a real informal thing the coaches do every year," Evangelist said referring to passing league. "We just kind of bring them together and do it in one field.

"It's not a traditional tournament, just more of an opportunity for coaches to get everybody together and work on six games in a two-day period," he said.

After the first round Thursday, participants will be corralled for a few words from guest speaker and former New York Giant Norris Thomas.

The tourney is in a round robin, 7-on-7 touch format in which a quarterback, receivers and backs line up against a secondary and linebacking corps.
