>>50 years ago — The board of directors of the El Centro Chamber of Commerce has rejected a recommendation of the Holtville Chamber of Commerce that highways 111 and 187 become known as Highway 99 alternate.

>>40 years ago — Kay Griffin of Brawley and Ruth Kennedy of Calipatria are in Sacramento this week attending the annual Girl's State Conference, sponsored by the auxiliary of the American Legion. They are learning about government on state and local levels.

>>30 years ago — One range salary increase amounting to 5.6 percent for county appointed and elected department heads was approved by the Board of Supervisors. Other county employees received about a 4.1 percent increase. The board hiked salaries for all justice court judges on average 9.6 percent.

>>20 years ago — A 17-minute power outage this morning cut off power to the entire city of Calipatria, its surrounding rural areas and the northwest quarter of Brawley. Dick Taylor, Imperial Irrigation District public relations director, said today, a breaker relay in Niland shut off power to the Calipatria and Rio Vista substations at 9:58 a.m. Power was back on at 10:15 a.m.
