Tickets on sale for Filner, Garcia dinner

June 22, 2002|STAFF REPORT

HOLTVILLE — Rep. Bob Filner, D-San Diego, and his challenger for the 51st congressional district, Republican Maria Guadalupe Garcia, are scheduled to speak at the annual El Centro Chamber of Commerce dinner July 2 at the Barbara Worth Resort near here.

Census redistricting cut Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, out of the congressional district. Hunter served as Imperial County's congressman for the last 20 years.

Filner has represented the 50th congressional district for five terms, where he shared the U.S.-Mexico border region with Hunter. The new 51st congressional district includes parts of San Diego County now served by Filner, and all of Imperial County.

Garcia is a resident of San Diego who graduated from San Diego State University. As a child, she spent summers in Imperial County with relatives.
