Sunsations win Imperial tri-meet

IMPERIAL — The El Centro Sunsations narrowly defeated the Imperial Sea Lions and Southern Arizona Sand Sharks of Yuma summer recreational swim teams in a tri-meet at the Imperial city pool Thursday.

El Centro scored 282 points, while Imperial earned 274 points and Yuma, 169.

The Imperial girls outswam El Centro and Yuma 146-132-105, respectively, but the El Centro boys made up the difference by defeating Imperial and Yuma 150-128-64.

Taylor Haller, 8, Samantha Ross, 10, and Stephanie Brock, 14, led the way for Imperial, winning two events each. Haller took the 7-8 25-yard backstroke in 21.56 seconds, just edging teammate Ashlyn Brundy, 9, in the 25-yard freestyle (18.81).

Ross earned the win in the 9-10 50-yard butterfly (36.71) and a win in the 50-yard freestyle (35.34), while Brock took care of the 13-14 division by winning both the 50-yard butterfly (31.43) and the 50-yard backstroke (34.55).


Stevie Wills, 12, led her El Centro girls with wins in the 11-12 50-yard butterfly (31.87), the 50-yard breaststroke (35.53) and the 50-yard freestyle (29.24).

At the top for the Yuma girls was Jennifer Shah, 15, who won in the 15-18 50-yard butterfly (31.83) and the 50-yard backstroke (33.50).

Championing the El Centro boys were Christian Cervantes, 10, and Julio Martinez, 12, with both scoring three wins.

Cervantes dominated the 9-10-year-old division with firsts in the 50-yard butterfly (45.67), the 50-yard backstroke (43.13) and the 50-yard freestyle (34.91).

Martinez cleaned up in the 11-12 division by winning the 50-yard backstroke (44.73), the 50-yard breaststroke (47.81) and the 50-yard freestyle (33.75).

Tony Deen, 15, led the Imperial boys with wins in both the 15-18 50-yard butterfly (34.66) and the 50-yard breaststroke (37.51) while Yuma's Justin Roberts, 6, won the 6 & under 25-yard butterfly (33.19), 25-yard breaststroke (32.56) and the 25-yard freestyle (25.78).
