HEBER — California Highway Patrol officers arrested an El Centro man on suspicion of felony driving under the influence of alcohol after a near head-on accident Sunday south of here.

A Highway Patrol report states Esteban Gonzalez, 34, was arrested after an accident around 1:25 a.m. Sunday on Dogwood Road north of Willoughby Road.

According to Sheriff's Office logs another man, Filadelfo Ramirez, 33, of Calexico was arrested at the same time, at the same location on suspicion of felony hit-and-run while driving under the influence of alcohol, but information on how he was involved in the accident was not available.

The CHP press release states Angelica Silva, 32, of Calexico was driving a sports-utility vehicle south on Dogwood. With her were passengers Imelda Verni, 23, a 5-year-old boy, a 10-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl.

Gonzalez's car was heading north on Dogwood but was traveling in the southbound lanes just north of Willoughby Road, the report states.

Silva saw another vehicle approaching her head-on when that vehicle was about 100 feet from her.

Both drivers swerved to their left to avoid a head-on collision. Gonzalez's sedan struck the right rear of Silva's vehicle with its right front end.

Occupants of both vehicles were wearing their seat belts according to the press release. Gonzalez sustained no injuries while all the occupants in the SUV sustained minor injuries and were treated at El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Ramirez is in county jail with bail set at $25,000. According to a spokeswoman in the county jail, there is no record of Gonzalez being arrested.
