Investigators look into cause of fires

June 24, 2002|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

CALEXICO — A vacant house and an abandoned grocery store next door to each other were burned here Sunday, and police and fire investigators are working together to find the cause of the blazes.

The fires destroyed the abandoned grocery store at 832 2nd St. and damaged the house next to it at 828 2nd St.

Calexico Fire Capt. Ernesto Avila said his department is working with police investigators to determine the origin of both fires.

The grocery store fire was reported at 3 a.m. Sunday. The call reporting the house fire came around 6:22 p.m.

Avila said a palm tree next to the house caught fire and spread to a fence and the house. The house sustained damage to part of the roof, said Avila. Firefighters extinguished the fire before it caused any more damage to the house.

Avila added investigators have found some evidence at the scene and are analyzing them. They are also following a couple of leads.

Although Avila did not want to determine the fires to be the work of an arsonist, he said it's a possibility.
