Voice: Nonsense letters to the editor need to be edited or quashed

June 24, 2002

A recent letter to the editor spoke about your columnist, Rudy Yniguez, in a derogatory manner and failed to explain why. Your blurb says letters will be edited for clarity and also that you will not publish anything libelous.

Does this mean that that letter meets your journalistic standards? If so, then I am very disappointed in your journalistic standards. I, for one, am very tired of ethnic appellations being used to express criticism. One's ethnic heritage is a matter to take pride in, but America is a land where many peoples and nations have united into one free country. There is no room for petty differences or divisions in a time when we all need to stand up for our country as one people

I hope in the future that I will be reading letters that explain what the writer thought he or she was saying and without the name-calling, please.
