Voice: Name-calling shows lack of reason

June 25, 2002

Michael Brewster of La Mesa recently responded to a letter written by Chuck Mobley, accusing him of being everything from a liar to a "mental dwarf."

Before Mr. Brewer speaks he should first consider the facts we have at hand. Those on his side of the issue falsely claim that that the current division of the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is a 50/50 proposition. When you consider the fact that a considerable portion of currently open area is not really a riding area and the fact there are already 32,000 acres of wilderness area in the dunes, the true division is more like 65/35 in favor of closed areas.

Additionally, the plant that started this whole thing has been shown to be thriving, and doing just as well if not better, in the open areas as the closed. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has already stated that the study used to classify the milkvetch as threatened is probably invalid.

Responses like Mr. Brewer's only show the true bankruptcy of the position those who wish to bar the public from public land are in. When he sinks to name-calling, he merely shows the lack of reasonable arguments supporting his tenuous position.
