CALEXICO — A Tijuana man died Tuesday east of here while attempting to cross illegally into the U.S.

The man's name was not available this morning but county Sheriff's Office Coroner Investigator Deputy Henry Proo said he thinks the victim was around 20 years old.

Proo said the body of the man was found around 2:30 p.m. by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Coyote 1 about two miles south of Highway 98. They found the body after another man, traveling with the Tijuana man, notified agents his companion was sick and needed help.

When agents and the other man reached the Tijuana man he was dead.

Proo said the two had apparently crossed the border by themselves and were not traveling with a group. Both crossed the border illegally around 6 a.m.

Proo said despite the summer heat local authorities have not seen an increase in heat-related deaths in recent weeks. He added the number of illegal immigrant deaths in Imperial County is the same as a couple of months ago.
