Imperial Babe Ruth all-stars beat Brawley

June 27, 2002|STAFF REPORT

IMPERIAL — A botched potential double play in the bottom of the seventh inning was all it took for the Imperial 14-15-year-old Babe Ruth all-stars to snap a tie and beat the Brawley all-stars 6-5 during the District 7 inter-city tournament here Wednesday.

With Imperial leading 5-3 in the top of the seventh, Brawley's Daniel Gaxiola knocked a base hit to drive in Julian Escalera and Chris Flores to tie the score.

In the bottom of the seventh, Imperial pitcher Eddie Martinez walked, subsequently advancing to third. After Matt Lopez hit a shot back to the pitcher that might have been a double play, Brawley's catcher dropped the ball, allowing Martinez to score and end the game.

Martinez also got the win on the mound, pitching through the fourth inning and returning for the seventh. He notched seven strikeouts and allowed five runs, three of which were earned.

Imperial's J.R. Antunez went 2-for-4 and Martinez went 2-for-3 with a walk.

Brawley's Gaxiola had the big numbers of the game, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Teammate Julian Escalera went 2-for-4.

Imperial faces Calexico at 8:30 tonight at Imperial High School.

In Wednesday's other 14-15-year-old contest, the El Centro all-stars had little trouble sending home Holtville from the double-elimination tournament. El Centro won 7-1.

El Centro scored runs in each inning, led by a two-inning opening frame.

Leading El Centro were Juan Ramirez, who hit a double, triple and an RBI, and Alex Martinez with two hits and an RBI. Tyler Martin threw a complete game, giving up four hits and striking out five.

Bucky Durant recorded two hits for Holtville.

El Centro plays Brawley at 6 tonight at Imperial High.

In the 13-year-old tournament at Brawley's Wiest Field, the El Centro all-stars beat Brawley 15-9 while Calexico beat Holtville 18-12.

Calexico will play Brawley in the losers' bracket at 6 tonight and Imperial will take on El Centro in the winners' bracket at 8:30 tonight.
