E.C. library summer schedule in effect

The El Centro Public Library, 539 State. St., began its summer schedule Monday.

Summer hours for the main public library will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Hours for the Community Center library branch, 375 S. 1st St., are from noon to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

The library's summer reading program, "Discover the Magic of Reading," began Monday and continues through July 31.

Young readers from preschool-age through high school are invited to visit the library to borrow books and to continue to read during the summer months.

The library will continue to register children to participate in the program throughout the summer, concluding July 31.

Incentives will be given to participants throughout the summer months to encourage them to keep reading books.

The El Centro Fire Department will visit the library at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Firefighters will talk to children about fire safety and demonstrate fire equipment in the library parking lot.


On July 10, the Gypsy Folk Ensemble will visit the library and present dances from around the world.

On July 17, the library will be conducting an art project for all ages and on July 24, the library be visited by a local magician.

The final program will be July 31, when the library has its award ceremony to recognize readers who have participated in the summer reading program.

The main library will be opened 52 hours each week and the branch library will be open 25 hours a week.

Persons interested in receiving a free library card should come to the library and complete a library card application.

To receive a library card persons should bring an identification card with their current address, such as a California identification card or a California driver's license, and also either a rent receipt, an utility bill or a first-class piece of mail that shows their name and current address.

Parents who wish to allow their child to have a library card are encouraged to complete and sign their child's library card application and return it to the library.
