Four locals qualify for state

IMPERIAL BEACH — Southwest High School's Eddie Conner was the top Imperial Valley wrestler at the CIF-San Diego Section Masters tournament here Saturday.

Conner won the 173-pound division after beating Poway High's Daniel Almanza 1-0 in the championship match to earn a trip to the state championship in Stockton starting Friday.

Other local state qualifiers were Brawley Union High's Bobby Velasco and Bobby Myers and Calexico High's Eddie Garcia.

Velasco earned third place at 114 pounds, beating Calexico High's Estevan Jimenez 13-9.

Myers finished second at 147 pounds, losing 3-1 to La Costa Canyon High's Ryan Williams in the final.

Garcia decisioned Fallbrook High's Enrique Solis 5-2 to take third place at 105 pounds.

Falling short of qualifying for state was Imperial's Mark Takara at 142 pounds. Takara lost in double overtime to Vista High's Kevin Hall in the third-place match. After a 3-3 tie, Hall scored the first point in sudden death.

The state tournament will be staged at University of the Pacific in Stockton.
