The resolution will be sent to the county Board of Supervisors and other city councils in the county, along with a cover letter requesting they also adopt the resolution.
Need for the resolution voicing of support apparently stems from a review by the staff of the Coordinating Council on Higher Education. This group’s report indicated a negative disposition toward continuation of the Imperial Valley school.
>> 30 years ago — Growers Ben and Tony Abatti are challenging the new Imperial Irrigation District penalty assessment program for water wasters.
The IID board Tuesday unanimously rejected an Abatti claim for damages, but attorneys for the El Centro growers may take the matter to court.
Meanwhile, the IID board has agreed to refund all assessments levied, including against the Abattis, since the program became effective Aug. 1. The refund will come in the form of a credit on future water bills.
>> 20 years ago — Educators in the Valley are unsure why the governor vetoed a bill extending the life of the state’s bilingual education program but seem to agree the legislation will be reintroduced and approved before the program expires next spring.
“Every single education organization in California supported passage of this legislation,” said Lila Martin, bilingual coordinator for the Imperial County Office of Education. “We have no idea what prompted him to veto it.”
Gov. George Deukmejian last week vetoed the bill that would have extended for five years the state’s bilingual program as well as several other special school programs. After his veto he said he favored bilingual education but believed several Republican proposals were ignored by Assembly Democrats, where Speaker Willie Brown, D-San Francisco, introduced the bill AB 2813.
