ESCONDIDO — The Calexico High football team kicked off the nonleague season with a tough 70-0 loss against the Escondido Cougars here Friday night.

The Cougars took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and were up 56-0 at half time.

“That team was good, but it wasn’t 70 points better than we were,” said Calexico second-year head coach Alfie Silva. “We have a core of seniors, but we have some role players that are still trying to feel their way out.”

Despite the high-score loss, the Bulldogs will look to bounce back.

“This is nothing to hold our head down. We ran into a very good Escondido team that is a legitimate Division I school,” Silva said. “I think, given time, we will be OK the rest of the season.

“We gotta learn from this and improve for next week,” Silva said.

The Bulldogs will have their first home game against the Desert Mirage Rams at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
