Off-duty El Centro cop puts stop to car burglary

August 24, 2009|By MEGAN GLENN, Staff Writer

An El Centro police officer got an early start to his work day Sunday, halting a vehicle burglary in progress before he even checked into the station.

The officer, John Tang, was on his way to work at 5:50 a.m. when he saw three teenage males near the 1500 block of Barbara Worth Drive in El Centro searching through the windows of cars with a flashlight. Tang called for on-duty officers, and just before they arrived the three suspects entered one of the vehicles, said police Sgt. Jerrold Novak.

When the on-duty officers arrived, two of the males surrendered themselves, but one fled.

“And that’s when John ran after them and was able to catch them,” Novak said.

The fleeing suspect jumped a fence into the rear parking lot of the post office, Novak said, and Tang followed. When the suspect saw police units along the street in front of him, he attempted to double back, which is when he was apprehended by Tang.

All three teens, who are ages 15, 16, and 17, were arrested.

“He did a good job,” Novak said of Tang.
