For many of us who are reading this article, we will be gathering with our family and friends, sharing meals, gifts and laughter during this Holy Season.
During these last two weeks, the Sister Evelyn Mourey Center, whose vision is to serve the community of the Imperial Valley, has seen several families that come to our center experiencing poverty or unjust situations. These families will not be sharing meals, gifts or laughter during Christmas unless someone can help and hear their cry.
One is a couple who were able to rent a small mobile home without a stitch of furniture. They both have been sleeping on the floor for the last two weeks. This middle-age couple came to Imperial Valley searching for work. The man was able to find work, with a very small salary. When they came to our center seeking help, the only furniture we could give them was one of our patio plastic tables and two plastic chairs. They are in desperate need of a bed, dresser, chairs, small sofa, and other furniture.
Please check your garage if you have one of these items. The couple’s name is Mr. and Mrs. Joe Grijalva. They live at 1101 N. Sixth Street, Space #40, El Centro. This could be your gift of love to them. The other situation is a homeless woman living on the street. She needs $400 deposit to rent a small apartment. When she came to our center for help, the funds that we get from EFSP to help families with their rent had depleted.
You can help this person with her rent by calling our center, 760-352-1039 or by stopping at the center located at Posada del Sol Apartments on Pico Street. A single mother needs a bed for her 16-year-old daughter and a washing machine. She does not have the money to do the laundry at the Laundromat. If you have a washing machine that you are no longer using, please call the center. God calls each and every one of us to alleviate the burdens of these families. God bless you.
