CALEXICO --- An 85-year-old Calexico man was arrested this week on suspicion of trying to smuggle 217 pounds of marijuana at the downtown Port of Entry, a press statement reported.
The elderly driver of a 1993 Nissan pickup truck was ordered to head into the secondary area of inspection Wednesday afternoon where U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers used a dog to find the drug, the statement read. CBP officers noticed unspecified "discrepancies" with the truck, the statement reported.
Thirty-five wrapped packages of marijuana that carried an estimated street value of $98,800 was found in a compartment at the bed of the truck. The senior Calexico resident whose name was not released was arrested for his alleged role in the attempted smuggling effort and the CBP seized the marijuana.
