Tell us how you ended up in this line of work.

My father and Blake’s grandfather, Casey Mostrong, was the original owner. He opened shop on Fourth Street in El Centro in 1955 and moved to our current location in 1963. Casey was head of the emergency aviation repair department in San Diego during World War II. After the War, he brought his mechanical skills to El Centro and opened what is now K-C Welding & Rentals. Michael and Blake are second and third generation family members who have joined the business and are carrying on Casey’s legacy.

What are memories from your career that stick out with you the most?

Our memories include Casey’s truly one-of-akind inventions and patents of vegetable planters, tillage equipment, and other farm tools. We remember the many ups and downs of working with family but also take great pride in the enormous growth the company has experienced since Casey first started it. Most importantly we value the knowledge we’ve gained from the many years working hand in hand with our skilled employees and our many loyal customers.

What do you most like and least like about your work?

Our likes include the satisfaction we have in seeing our products in use in the fields and knowing those products being planted or harvested are on our dinner tables every evening. We like to think we’re an asset to the farm, geothermal and industrial communities as well as the homeowners in the Imperial Valley. We are especially proud of being able to provide jobs to over 30 employees. As far as dislikes go, we really don’t have any. We here at K-C strive to take a positive approach to everything we tackle. We love our job and are grateful to have the business we have.

What makes your business unique?

Our business is unique in many ways. We strive to be a one-stop shop for almost anybody. Services offered here at K-C include equipment rentals, both for construction companies and the homeowner. We have a complete and extensive welding/fab and machine shop, industrial parts and supply store plus we sell commercial steel. We also have a palm tree nursery along with lawn and garden equipment. Here at K-C we try to cover all bases.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to open a business?

Being in business is a huge responsibility and requires years of dedication and honest hard work, period. Manage your money well especially in times such as now, treat your employees well, listen to customer feedback, tackle new adventures and always love what you do.

How do you give back to the local community?

Every year we donate to the Southwest High School football and basketball teams. We also buy an ad every year in the Southwest yearbook. We have also supported local Pop Warner football and Little League teams.
