  • Brawley's Hank Baran hits off the 16th hole tee box in the annual Elmer Sears Lettuce Golf Tournament on Saturday in Brawley.

BRAWLEY — Despite frigid temperatures and the threat of rain, all matches in Saturday’s semifinal rounds of the 83rd annual Elmer Sears Lettuce Golf Tournament were completed.

The field was cut in half for the third round match play at the Del Rio Golf Course here.

Brawley’s John Currier continues to stay in the championship winner’s bracket, defeating Josh Colace on the 14th hole. With his fourth Lettuce Tournament title only one match away, Currier will need to get past one more opponent — Hank Baran of Brawley

Baran won the tournament in 2009. On Saturday, Baran defeated El Centro’s Frank Oswalt on the 17th hole to advance to today’s final round.

After completion of Saturday’s rounds, half of the field is again eliminated leaving 44 golfers to continue on in the final round.

The championship flight tees off at 8:30 a.m. with a 36-hole contest, and the remaining 10 flights of golfers will play 18 holes beginning at 8:40 a.m.

The public is invited to watch the golf action on the course.  The traditional Lettuce Tournament fried chicken buffet lunch will be available to players and spectators. Look in SCOREBOARD for results.
