BRAWLEY — John Currier of Brawley captured his fourth tournament title after winning the 83rd annual Elmer Sears Lettuce Golf Tournament at the Del Rio Golf Course here Sunday.
Currier beat Brawley’s Hank Baran in a tough 36-hole battle Sunday. The day of match play began with Currier getting a birdie on the first hole, which set the pace for him to hold the lead most of the day.
In a late rally attempt, Baran was able to even the match on the 33rd hole but missed a 4-footer that would have left him one stroke up after hole 16.
Currier came back with a birdie on the 17th hole then finished up on the final 18th with an impressive 20-foot putt to end the match and win the title.
“Winning for the fourth time is awesome. Making that putt on the last hole made me feel like Tiger (Woods) for a short time,” Currier said.
In the consolation bracket championship, first-time Lettuce tournament participant Garret Fargo of Brawley was able to pull out a win from his golf bag after 16 holes to beat Steve Lyerly of Florida.
Ten additional flights of golfers competed for division titles as they also finished their 18-hole matches. Thursday’s field of 176 golfers was narrowed down to the best 44 players in the final drive after elimination rounds on Friday and Saturday.
