Salton Sea History Museum closes

June 07, 2011|By IMPERIAL VALLEY PRESS STAFF WRITER

The Salton Sea History Museum has closed after Riverside County officials told museum staff that the museum no longer had a right to use its office at the North Shore Yacht Club in the community of North Shores.

Museum officials were told last month by county officials that the museum would have to vacate its second floor office space, museum director Jennie Kelley said. At the time, the museum and visitor center located in the building's first floor were still open to the public.

County officials then sent word to museum staff that the locks to the building would be changed this past Saturday, said Kelley. The county's action prompted Kelly to remove the contents from the museum and visitor center.

Recent talks involving Riverside County officials and museum staff about the future of the museum have failed to secure a lease agreement.

In a prepared statement, Riverside County Supervisor John J. Benoit said that county officials would continue to "work with the museum leadership to meet the simplest of legal requirements to make this work and sincerely consider options that will allow a museum to reopen at this center.”

County officials have expressed a desire to use the yacht club as an expanded teen center, Kelley said.
