Proposed Manzanita casino project open to public comment

October 08, 2011|By CHELCEY ADAMI | Staff Writer

The final environmental impact statement for the proposed Manzanita Casino Project in Calexico has been made available for public viewing and comment.

The Manzanita Band of Kumeyaay Indians’ project entails placing 60.8 acres into federal trust and later developed into a casino.

It would be on property at the southwest corner of State Highway 111 and Jasper Road with the Central Main and Dogwood canals along its border.

The Manzanita Band of Kumeyaay Indians wants to build the facility to improve its economic development opportunities, according to the FEIS.

The tribe has a lack of developable land on the reservation and few funds for project development, relying highly on federal and state government programs for social services.

The proposed project includes a 459,621 square-foot casino facility with 93,880 square feet of casino floor, 63,000 square feet of food/beverage and retail area, a 38,660 square-foot entertainment area and 218,081 square feet of operational facilities, a 46,000 square-foot banquet/meeting hall and a 200-room hotel.

The casino will have 2,000 slot machines, 45 gaming tables, three guest restaurants, an employee dining room, a swimming pool and 6,000 guest space parking facility.

Through this project, the tribe hopes to enhance its socioeconomic status as well as provide jobs for tribe members and residents of Imperial County.

Areas of controversy include impacts on public health and safety, existing nearby casinos and traffic. These issues are addressed in the FEIS.

Those interested can view the proposed project’s FEIS online or at libraries in Calexico and Holtville.

Comments must arrive by Nov. 7 and should be mailed to Amy Dutschke, Regional Director, Pacific Regional Office, Bureau of Indian Affairs, 2800 Cottage Way, Sacramento, CA 95825.

Letters should include author’s name and address. “FEIS Comments, Manzanita Band of Kumeyaay Indians, 60.8 Acre Fee to Trust Casino Project, Calexico, California” should be printed on the letter’s first page.
